Kamala Mills has suddenly seen a glut of launches this past year. Nestled in the back of the erstwhile mill's compound, is Tilt All Day, which quietly opened in the first week of 2014. Tilt, in this new era of build-it-and-they-will-come, is all things to all who walk through its doors. A bar, a lounge, a disco with an integrated light system and a restaurant – the weeknight we visited though it was empty, probably owing to the fact that it was a bank holiday. We were seated towards the back of the space which was decorated in colours that include bright orange, cerulean blue and grey. On the walls and from the ceiling is an impressive array of lights which the manager cycled through with a dedicated remote. Great for a Saturday night, we were less impressed when there for a meal on a Monday.
The too-big menus were unwieldy and floppy though that didn’t stop us from ordering a Whisky Smash (bourbon, fresh lime juice and mint leaves) and a cloyingly sweet strawberry daiquiri. The Smash was potent and minty. To share we ordered a pepperoni flatbread and cottage cheese-stuffed jacket potatoes. The small portion size of the former left us disappointed, while the latter was bland, with the minced cottage cheese stuffing causing a mess on our plates. And not even Tabasco could redeem the vegetarian appetiser.
Looking to clear the taste in our mouth, we were happy to eat a light, refreshing spaghetti aglio olio. Cheesy with a hint of oregano we finished it in no time. Also on the table was a honey bourbon chicken which was tender and smokey. We especially loved the crisp steamed vegetables it was served with, though you can avoid the stodgy orange Cajun bread.
Dino, our enthusiastic server recommended we try the Ferrero Rocher cake, a decadent square of silky chocolate topped with the round chocolate that gives the cake its name.
With a dance floor, private booths and pulsating music, Tilt All Day seems to be a great place to spend a weekend night. Weeknights might pull in after-work punters but we didn’t see any on our visit, which is a shame because the food while uninventive is worth stopping by for.
